Seasonal Naturopathic Remedies

General

During the winter months, many of us spend more time inside with the heat on. Indoor heating and low humidity create the perfect environment for cold and flu viruses to multiply. How can you protect yourself from catching those viruses and stay healthy during this time of year?

Holistic Medicine: Why We Must Exercise the Immune System

It may seem strange for a naturopathic doctor to say, but getting sick isn’t always a bad thing. Our immune system benefits from the occasional cold or flu, as it challenges and reminds our white blood cells and other immune fighters to do their job. Think of a mild cold as a fire drill for your immune system, that way if a real fire comes along, the body is ready. That being said, if you find you are susceptible to every little bug and are constantly sniffling and coughing through the winter months, a little prevention can go a long way.

Naturopathic Remedies to Avoid the Winter Blues!

Minimize Exposure

One of the best ways to prevent getting a cold or flu isn’t a holistic therapy, just good, old fashioned hand washing. This doesn’t mean running your hands under water for a few seconds. Use warm water, plenty of soap, and really rub your hands together vigorously for up to a minute to eliminate most germs. Also, avoid touching your face throughout the day; viruses often enter our body through our eyes, nose, and mouth.

Strengthen your Immune System

If you feel like you’re coming down with something, there are steps you can take to minimize the duration and severity of the illness.

1. Get enough sleep and minimize stress as much as possible. Your body cannot heal without adequate rest. Exercise, yoga, and meditation can all reduce the effects that stress has on the body.

2. Eat a healthy diet, with plenty of vegetables, good fats (see previous articles for details), whole grains, and lean protein. Some special immune boosting foods include garlic, onions, and brightly colored vegetables.

3. Stay away from sugar. One teaspoon of sugar has been shown to depress the immune system for up to four hours. So when you’re feeling run down, avoid as much processed sugar as you canincluding sodas, white bread, refined pasta, and even fruit juice. One common mistake people make is to drink lots of orange juice when feeling sick. The high amount of sugar in the OJ, however, counteracts the benefits from the Vitamin C. There are much better ways to get Vitamin C without all the sugar (see below for details).

Holistic Healing and the Power of Supplements

If, despite your best efforts, you still get sick more than ever, listen to your body. Rest, sleep, and take care of yourself. Take a sick dayfor you and for the sake of your co-workers. Supplements that can help include:

Vitamin C: When your body is sick, you can often take more Vitamin C that you usually would. We do recommend you get Vitamin C from a supplement when you are sick instead of from overdosing on orange juice!

Zinc: This mineral can help jumpstart the healing powers of your immune system.

Herbal Medicine: Echinacea is the most famous, but there are many herbs that have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Homeopathy Remedies: A well-chosen homeopathic remedy is often the difference between sufferings for weeks versus moving quickly through a cold.

Asthma Homeopathic Remedies

General

Today there are a large number of homeopathic remedies for asthma available but should only be used with the guidance of a person who has the experience and knowledge regarding homeopathic medicine and treatments.

  asthma treatment

Certainly when the right kinds of treatments are chosen a person will find that they can help to relieve the stress that they are feeling when an asthma attack occurs. However if the attack becomes much worse then that person should be seeking medical advice as soon as possible. Especially in cases where the person has a great deal of difficulty when they are breathing and their lips have gone a bluish color or it looks as if they are likely to lose consciousness.

In this article I am going to take a look at some homeopathic remedies that a person may want to consider using in order to treat their condition. But these should only be used under strict guidance from an experienced homeopathic therapist.

Carbo Vegetabilis

This particular remedy will be suggested for use by some during an asthma attack who feels weak or faint. Often they will feel as if their chest is hollow also. Plus they will often cough in such a way that they can actually begin to gag which will then make it very difficult for more air to gain access to their lungs. Also this particular homeopathic remedy will be used on those people who feel worse in the evening or after talking, eating or when they are laid down.

Camamillia

This particular homeopathic remedy has been designed for treating sufferers who suffer with a hard, dry but irritating cough which often occurs when they become exposed to air that is moving or when they become excited or angry.

Ipecacuanha

This particular remedy is provided to those sufferers who have coughing spasms which results in them either retching or vomiting. Also it is great for treating those who find that the mucus (phlegm) collects in their breathing tubes and when they try to cough it out they find it extremely difficult to do so.

Although I have provided information with regard to what kind of homeopathic remedies for asthma that may be given to some sufferers, there are also other asthma herbal remedies.

But until the homeopathic therapist knows what kind of asthma you are suffering from, they will not be able to devise a suitable remedy for you. The best thing you can do is find a knowledgeable and experienced homeopathic therapist to treat you. You can consult your own doctor who maybe able to suggest one and then take your time and discuss with them the best course of treatment for you.

An Introduction To Homeopathy

General

With natural health care so popular, an area that has shown incredible growth is that of homeopathic medicine. But, although you can find homeopathic remedies on health food store shelves, are you really clear on what a homeopathic specialist is and what these medicines can do? This article will address five things to know before you choose a homeopathic specialist or buy those homeopathic medicines off the shelf.

homeopathy and hpv

What are they?

Homeopathic remedies are medicines made by homeopathic pharmacies in accordance with the processes described in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States and are regulated by the FDA. These are not considered supplements. The remedies could be made from plants, minerals, animals or even from chemical drugs, such as penicillin or streptomycin. These substances are then carefully diluted, called potentization, until very little of the original substance remains. Because these are very dilute, small doses of medications, and they are available over the counter, many people feel they are safe. However, for serious health problems, a person should seek the advice of a knowledgeable healthcare professional. If they choose, it could be from one familiar with homeopathic medicine.

homeopathy and the intestines

Are they effective?

The fact that very little of the original substance remains, the question comes up how can they even be effective. According to homeopaths, this is based on similarities. When a similarity exists, a person is thought to have a hypersensitivity to that substance. Thus, while the remedy contains very little, in the practical sense, of the original material, it still contains the essence of the substance, or its energy. It’s thought to work by creating a resonance within the body that catalyzes it to begin a healing process.

How this works and if it’s effective is very controversial among traditional medical practitioners. To determine if a particular homeopathic drug is effective, experiments, called drug provings, are conducted. In these experiments, researchers administer continual doses of the substance to a healthy individual until a reaction to the substance is achieved. Once it is known what symptoms a substance causes, then it’s known what symptoms and illnesses it will cure. There have been several systematic reviews of placebo-controlled trails on homeopathy that have reported that its effects seem to be more than just placebo. One observational study found that patients were very satisfied with homeopathic treatments and that both they and their physicians noticed significant improvement. There is also evidence from randomized, controlled trials that homeopathy may be effective for treatment of otitis media in children, muscle soreness after running, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Again, though, I would like to emphasize that it would be wise to consult with a specialist before self-medicating, especially when it comes to children.

Who practices homeopathy?

The practice of homeopathy is incorporated into medical care by a broad range of healthcare practitioners. Medical doctors (MD’s) and doctors of osteopathy (DO’s) may elect to study homeopathy as a post-graduate specialty. Naturopathic doctors (ND’s) study homeopathy as part of their naturopathic school training. Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession of primary healthcare that emphasizes prevention and the promotion of optimal health. The scope of practice includes all aspects of family and primary care, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and all natural medicine modalities, including homeopathic medicine.

Where did it come from?

Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician who earned his doctorate of medicine degree in 1779 is recognized as the founder of homeopathy. Through experiments on himself, and later with his patients, he developed a system of rules and laws of medicine that he codified into a treatise called the ‘Organon of rational therapeutics’, first published in 1810. The sixth edition, published in 1921, is still used today as a basic homeopathy text. It was brought to the US in 1825 by several doctors who had studied in Europe. Although at one time there were 22 homeopathic medical colleges in the US, and one out of five doctors used homeopathy, by the 1940’s there were no homeopathic schools in the US.

Do your homework!

Naturopathic physicians are licensed as healthcare providers in 13 states with legal provisions allowing the practice of naturopathic medicine in several other states. To qualify for a license, the applicant must pass the licensing exam and satisfy all licensing requirements, such as have attended a resident course of 4 years and 4,100 hours of study from a college or university recognized by the state examining board. There are special certifications for various healthcare professionals. For MD’s and DO’s, there is the Diplomat in Homeotherapeutics (DHt). For ND’s, the certification is the DHANP (Diplomat of the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians), and for homeopaths of all professions, there is the CCH (Certified in Classical Homeopathy). What is important to know is that in states without licensure requirements for homeopathy, anyone can claim to be practicing ‘homeopathic medicine’.

Homeopathic medicine could be a great alternative to traditional medicine. It’s important to look into the background and training of anyone practicing homeopathic medicine, however, as many people promote themselves as an expert without the proper education. The National Center for Homoeopathy (http:///www.homeopathy.org) serves as a resource and training center for the practice of homeopathy. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (http://www.naturopathic.org) provides information on licensing and education requirements for those promoting themselves as a doctor of naturopathy. For a good overview of the art and science of homeopathy and its basic tenets, suggested reading is The Emerging Science of Homeopathy: Complexity, Biodynamics and Nanopharmacology, 2nd edition, by Bellavite P. Signorini.

Remedies For Tinnitus

General

Tinnitus is a type of ailment in which the patient experiences noise in the ear or head. The noise could be of any type such as ringing and swishing. More than a disease, it is an inconvenience that in most cases is resolved automatically with time. In some cases, tinnitus could be a symptom of the underlying disease.

The first step in treating tinnitus is evaluating the seriousness of the condition. It is done by conducting a series of tests, physical examination and other medical procedures on the patient. This helps the doctor to locate the origin of the noise based on the method of treatment is adopted. An audiogram or hearing test is advisable in case the noise is unexplainable.

If the physician is able to find a concrete reason for the source of the noise, then specific treatment steps are resorted to. Otherwise, the condition is best left to be resolved naturally with the passage of time. There are drugs like niacin that treat tinnitus but they are found to be effective only in particular cases. Some of the general treatment methods include limiting the use of drugs medicinal or others, protecting ears using mufflers or other clothing, controlling blood pressure, decreasing salt intake, avoiding exposure to loud noises, avoiding drinks that stimulate the nerves such as tea and coffee, mentally conditioning the patient to take less of the disease, taking adequate rest, avoiding strenuous activities and exercising regularly. In some cases, it is found that biofeedback can be one of the best remedies for tinnitus.

However, tinnitus is not something which must be taken with extreme gravity if you have reasons to believe that you are otherwise healthy. It may simply die out with time.

Is Homeopathy A Placebo ?

General

This article looks on homeopathy trials. Most were found to have a greater response than a placebo application.

homeopathy mrsa

Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician disenchanted with these methods, began to develop a theory based on three principles: the law of similars, the minimum dose, and the single remedy. The word homeopathy is derived from the Greek words for like (homoios) and suffering (pathos). With the law of similars, Hahnemann theorized that if a large amount of a substance causes certain symptoms in a healthy person, smaller amounts of the same substance can treat those symptoms in someone who is ill.

The basis of his theory took shape after a strong dose of the malaria treatment quinine caused his healthy body to develop symptoms similar to ones caused by the disease. He continued to test his theory on himself as well as family and friends with different herbs, minerals and other substances. He called these experiments "provings."

index for homeopathy remedies

As we might expect, the intensity of the symptoms caused by the original proving was harrowing. So Hahnemann began decreasing the doses to see how little of a substance could still produce signs of healing. With the minimum dose, or law of infinitesimals, Hahnemann believed that a substance strength and effectiveness increased the more it was diluted.

Minuscule doses were prepared by repeatedly diluting the active ingredient by factors of 10. A "6X" preparation (the X is the Roman numeral for 10) is a 1-to-10 dilution repeated six times, leaving the active ingredient as one part per million. Essential to the process of increasing potency while decreasing the actual amount of the active ingredient is vigorous shaking after each dilution.

Some homeopathic remedies are so dilute, no molecules of the healing substance remain. Even with sophisticated technology now available, analytical chemists may find it difficult or impossible to identify any active ingredient. But the homeopathic belief is that the substance has left its imprint or a spirit-like essence that stimulates the body to heal itself.

Critics of homeopathy point out that no way such a dilute medicine could work. People are feeling better because of the placebo effect. Critics also say the research in homeopathy is very unimpressive. Proponents of homeopathy point out to numerous trials that have been successful.

Recent homeopathic trials include a trial done by A Swiss-UK review of 110 trials found no convincing evidence the treatment worked any better than a placebo. However, there seems to be many problems with this type of trail.

  best homeopathy in the products

The University of Limberg investigators, who are all epidemiologists, found 107 controlled studies in homeopathy. Most of these studies did not meet the research standard that they were looking for. However, 22 trials meet their strict criteria. The researchers used trials with a large number of people, double blind studies where neither physician or participant knew who was receiving the remedy or the placebo and a random assignment of patients in a treatment group.

Of the 22 trials, 15 were in the favor of Homeopathy working better than a placebo. The other 7 trials showed Homeopathy working equivalent to a placebo. This is almost a 2 to 1 ratio of successful homeopathic trials to unsuccessful studies.

Migraine Prevention And Relief With Homeopathic Remedies

General

When my debilitating migraine attacks had increased to the extent that they were occurring weekly, and affecting my ability to function and lead a ‘normal life’, it was time to find assistance.

homeopathy and migraine treatment

To find relief and help, my first port of call was to my General Practitioner who was most unsympathetic, implying that three young children, moving house and working were bound to have a detrimental effect on my health and the combination of stresses had ‘chosen’ to manifest in the form of migraine. When I asked for suggestions for relief, anti-depressants were offered as the ‘best course of action’. The GP also intimated that in time the migraines would probably disappear; if not a hysterectomy may be the answer!

I wasn’t asked if any other family members had similar problems. Nor was I warned about the possible side-effects of the anti-depressants, including the potential of becoming addicted. The whole visit was over within five minutes, I left the surgery reluctantly clutching a prescription. Hopefully this was an atypical experience, and GPs these days are more sympathetic.

homeopathic medicine for migraine

I decided to carry out research into the side effects these anti-depressant drugs could induce. I was horrified to find that the symptoms I suffered, headache, nausea, difficulty concentrating etc. could be further aggravated, and there were other potential side effects such as sexual dysfunction, hair loss and abdominal pain. My immediate instinct was to throw the prescription away; in no way did I want all those chemicals inside me, potentially doing untold long term damage to my body. Neither did I want a hysterectomy, as my migraines did not coincide with monthly hormonal changes.

I had tried all the well-meaning advice from friends and family: for instance cut out possible dietary triggers, have more sleep, avoid stress. When none of these worked, I decided to take the complementary therapy route, and a friend suggested that homeopathy could be of benefit. The use of homeopaths was not as widely known as it is today and many people inferred that their practices were somewhat dubious.

Unperturbed and determined to find someone to help me I used the local telephone directory to seek out registered homeopaths, finally arranging an initial consultation with the one who seemed the most genuinely interested and concerned with my plight during our introductory telephone conversation.

When I arrived, the homeopath began explaining in detail the ‘like-for-like’ principles of homeopathy. She was not at all offended or alarmed by my questions about her training and qualifications, the answers to which were most reassuring.

Treatment for Migraine

We had a full discussion of my family and medical history. During this, I confided my fears that these migraines could be a precursor to developing epilepsy, like my sister. We also discussed my present and past emotional states and the holistic approach to finding suitable relief.

During the consultation I explained that my migraine usually started at the back of the head and spread predominantly to the right temple, accompanied by a pounding, throbbing pain and was worsened by light, noise, jarring and cold hands and feet. From this and careful questioning about other life and family factors, the homeopath concluded that Belladonna would be beneficial for me.

deadly nightshade migraine relief

She told me that Belladonna is also known as Deadly Nightshade. I was somewhat alarmed by this and expressed my concerns over using such a toxic and sometimes fatal plant. The homeopath carefully explained that the doses of Belladonna that I would be taking were very diluted but confirmed that it should only be used when prescribed by a qualified practitioner, and should NEVER be used as a self-help measure, for example picking it from the wild.

As an aside, Belladonna means ‘beautiful eyes’ in Italian and preparations of it were used in days gone-by to dilate the pupils and make women appear more alluring and sexy.

Although that was a fascinating snippet of information, I was even more interested to hear that Belladonna has been a beneficial remedy for over 500 years. It was also reassuring to find out that many non-prescription cough syrups sold over the counter contain atropine which is obtained from Belladonna.

My homeopath explained that should Belladonna not be beneficial there were other homeopathic remedies such as Sanguinarine, which is used to treat migraines with similar symptoms but accompanied by vomiting, which rarely happened in my case. Therefore it was agreed that Belladonna be prescribed initially.

    Natural Care Migraine Relief ingredients

I was recommended to take the Belladonna in tablet form twice a day, three in the morning and three at night over five days and return for further consultation within 7 days. She also advised me to exclude cheese, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol for the time being, while keeping a headache diary to enable triggers to be identified and discussed during future consultations.

I continued visiting the homeopath on a weekly basis for several months, all the while continuing to take daily doses of Belladonna which were gradually reduced. The homeopath always made the visits productive and as she found out more and more about me, my life-style and triggers, she noticed that I have a tendency to clench my jaw and grind my back teeth when subjected to topics of discussion that were upsetting or made me angry. She advised me always to sleep with my mouth slightly ajar to prevent muscle tension. I still try to remember to do this, if I feel stressed, and even as I go to sleep. The improvements in the severity, intensity and frequency of my migraines were astounding and gradually they disappeared.

I strongly recommend that anyone who suffers from migraine attacks should consult with a homeopath as I’m sure they will find the experience and their professionalism as ‘life-changing’ as I have.

To repeat: Belladonna is another name for deadly night-shade, and should NEVER be self-administered. Use it ONLY under the supervision of a registered and qualified practitioner.
