A good definition of a home remedy is a course of treatment that uses non-conventional medicine to treat or attempt to cure an aliment or disease. Commonly, home remedies use a combination of vegetables, spices and minerals. The popularity of using home remedies to treat ailments has grown with the development of the internet with many previously being passed down from one person to another as a result of tradition or word of mouth. Quite often, home remedies are result in being placebo effects (you think they work because something is being successful at treating the ailment) but many have been proven to be extremely successful treating common human ailments. Take a hot drink. When you have a cold, the heat of the drink makes you sweat and thus you "sweat the cold" out of your system. Some people strongly adhere to using chicken soup to treat a number of ailments including respiratory ailments.

Using home remedies to treat ailments have been around for hundreds of years. In fact, many of today’s home remedies stem from the use and regular noted practice during medieval times. Historic cookbooks often included sections about home remedies and just by consulting Chinese medicine, you can see that certain food types are still used heavily to help alleviate ailments.
A common mistake by many people is to confuse homeopathy with home remedies. Homeopathy is believed to have Greek connotations, and is a form "alternative" medicine. One of the big differences is that homeopathy is considered a medical type of practice such as physiotherapy or osteopathy and is quite often a studied and qualified form of medical practice, whereas home remedies tend to be traditional. Homeopathy is considered to be defined since 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe to use to humans however there have been many documented cases of unregistered homeopaths putting patients at risk by advising them not to use conventional medical techniques. It is often considered by many to be part of a medical program rather than replacement of conventional medicine. The main belief behind homeopathy is that homeopaths use treatment according to a patient’s consultation using a combination of the psychological and physical state of the patient as part of the remedy.

One of the drawbacks of homeopathy remedies are that in many countries where homeopathy is practised, the laws of regulation don’t apply to the homeopathic remedies. In many of the far eastern countries such as India, China and Japan, homeopathy is practised more than in the western world. However, the western world is starting to accept the possible advantages of using homeopathic remedies to treat ailments as countries such as the United Kingdom have started opening homeopathic hospitals and physicians often referring patients to homeopaths.
Regardless of statistics, homeopathy is a popular form of treatment. A 1999 World Health Organisation report advised that homeopathy was considered one of the most widespread non-conventional approaches to treatment known in the world in addition to herbal medicine, osteopathy and Chinese medicine. Whether you accept this or not, home remedies are not part of homeopathy and should only be used as an option not as a complete substitute for the ailments being treated.
